School suspends players for Tebowing in halls

Sure, the issue of prayer in public school is a touchy subject. But what of Tebowing in public school? Four students at Long Island?s Riverhead High School ? including three varsity football players ? have been suspended for Tebowing in the halls (see photo), which they were apparently doing pretty much nonstop for three straight days.

Photo and video here.

Brothers Tyler and Connor Carroll, and their friends Jordan Fulcoly and Wayne Drexel were all given one day of in-school suspension Wednesday after three days of getting on one knee and bringing their fists to their forehead like Mr. Tebow?s signature move.

?We?ve been doing it all week,? said Tyler Carroll of Calverton. ?We started on Monday. We saw Tebow doing it and thought it would be funny. More people saw and started to join in. It was really catching fire.?

The school is saying they have no problem with the Tebowing, per se, except that it caused a ?dangerous situation? in the hallways, blocking students from getting to class. I suspect a much deeper, philosophical conspiracy, but then I always do. Please ignore my rantings.

Carroll says the suspension was a bit unfair, and despite the school?s claim to the contrary, he and his friends were never told to stop.

?The administration told us that our Tebowing was blocking the halls and could potentially cause a riot, because they were growing in number and if the wrong kid gets pushed a brawl could ensue,? Carroll told Prep Rally. ?We had no idea that we could get suspended for such a thing. It was a joke between a group of friends that took a life of its own. We figured at the most we would just be told to stop.?

Lions DT Suh says little about stomp, suspension (AP)

ALLEN PARK, Mich. ? Ndamukong Suh is back with the Detroit Lions. And he's not interested in rehashing the past.

Suh declined to answer questions Wednesday about his two-game suspension and car accident after rejoining his teammates for the first time in two-plus weeks.

"The most important thing right now is this football team and not me individually," Suh said.

The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year was forced by the NFL to sit out two games without pay for stepping on the right arm of Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith during a loss on Thanksgiving Day.

He was defiant during his postgame news conference that day and after the Lions criticized his conduct the next day, Suh followed up on his Facebook page with an apology to his teammates, organization and fans. Why he hasn't ? at least publicly ? said sorry to Dietrich-Smith was one of the questions Suh left unanswered.

Suh said he wouldn't change his game after his fourth fine from the league earlier this year. On Wednesday, he said nothing has altered that mind-set.

"I think I can pretty much stick with that, playing within the rules and continuing to play between the whistles," Suh said.

Suh was banned from Lions headquarters during his suspension. He returned to his hometown of Portland, Ore., and was in a car accident on his first weekend away from the team. Police decided not to investigate further after two women claimed they were injured during the wreck.

He wouldn't respond to questions about the crash. Suh seemed aware that unflattering things have been written and said about him, but doesn't look or sound concerned.

"It's not going to make me cry at night," he said.

Of more interest to Suh and the rest of the Lions is the team's quest to make the playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season. The team lost at New Orleans and barely beat Minnesota at home without Suh.

Detroit (8-5) plays at Oakland (7-6) this weekend in a game it needs to win to keep its favorable spot in the NFC wild-card race.

Even though Suh has been on his own since the suspension, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said he looked about the same as he did before being forced to stay out of the building.

"He's obviously healthy," Schwartz said. "And we need all the healthy players we can get, particularly for this last stretch."

Suh didn't think anything was out of the ordinary about his first workout with teammates in a while.

"Practice to me was normal," he said. "I wasn't out of breath."

He saved some breath in a calm, but terse, session with reporters following practice. Suh acknowledged needing to be accountable for his actions, but said answering every question from the media was not one of his responsibilities.

"It doesn't always involve you guys," he said. "It's been handled. You guys make your speculations and then you report what you think is right and not right."

Notes: Lions DT Nick Fairley went through at least part of Wednesday's practice while banged-up players CB Eric Wright, S Louis, CB Aaron Berry, LB Justin Durant and DE Lawrence Jackson were held out because of injuries while reporters had access. ... Starting CB Chris Houston, who has missed two games with an injured left knee, practiced and said he expects to play at Oakland. RB Kevin Smith was on the field and was optimistic about playing Sunday after missing the Vikings game.

NFL Owners Expand Loans for Stadiums

MINNEAPOLIS - Just when the Vikings stadium site selection seemed to be narrowed down to two choices, a third location is back in running as NFL owners vote to expand a loan program that could send extra money to building a new home for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Linden Avenue site seems to be gaining some traction after Sam Grabarski, president and CEO of the Downtown Council said both that site and the Farmers Market local are possibilities. Now, Linden Avenue is being promoted for its access to bars, hotels, transit and freeways.

"We are assembling teams of experts to help them understand that site fully, and I'm awaiting news from them as to how interested they are," Grabarski said.

The team says it is waiting for more information before moving ahead in Minneapolis, but it's still maintaining its commitment with Arden Hills.

The Metrodome remains a candidate, and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak emphasizes that it is the cheapest option with the most support on the City Council, though he said all of the city's potential sites have their own appeal.

"I think all Minneapolis sites offer great potential," Rybak said. "If there is some way to find more money for another site or more votes for another site, I'm all for it."

More money may be available to the Vikings thanks to a vote the NFL owners took on Wednesday night in Dallas. The league voted to expand it's G4 loan program, which provides teams with funds to expand or build stadiums. The move could send up to $200 million toward the team's $400 million contribution.

Microsoft launches SkyDrive app for Windows Phone and iPhone, forms No Androids Club

SkyDrive App
Microsoft's love affair with iOS isn't over yet. Hot on the heels of an iPad-supporting OneNote update and the App Store debut of Kinectimals, comes an official SkyDrive app for the iPhone. Of course, the Redmond crew isn't leaving its own handsets out in the cold. Windows Phone 7 is also getting an app to compliment its already rather deep integration with cloud storage service. Both apps sport, more or less, the same feature set: the ability to browse all of your files, share them with others, delete them and create new folders. When sharing links you can even choose whether or not a person can edit a document or simply view it. At least for now it appears that Android users who also happen to be SkyDrive fans will have to make do with the mobile web site. To see both the iPhone and WP7 versions of the app in action head on after the break.

SAP splashes out in cloud-computing frenzy (Reuters)

FRANKFURT/NEW YORK (Reuters) ? SAP AG's $3.4 billion takeover of SuccessFactors will help it keep up with peers in the frenzied race for cloud-computing business, even if the price paid is very high at first glance, analysts said on Monday.

"We believe SuccessFactors could be a very good strategic fit for SAP in the cloud sector and we prefer the decision to grow externally in this booming area," DZ Bank analyst Oliver Finger said.

SAP said on Saturday it was buying U.S. web-based services company SuccessFactors for an agreed $40 per share, a 52 percent premium.

The deal helps SAP catch up with rivals in cloud computing, a fast-growing field where data and processes are hosted remotely on the Web.

As part of the transaction, SuccessFactors founder and chief executive Lars Dalgaard will join SAP's executive board and will run its cloud business.

"This marks implicit recognition by SAP that their cloud strategy is not working," Evolution Securities analyst Roger Phillips said.

SAP shares were down 2.5 percent at 43.60 euros at the market close in Franfkurt, while Germany's blue-chip DAX index was up 0.4 percent. SuccessFactors shares climbed 51 percent on the New York Stock Exchange to $39.70, nearly hitting the price being paid by SAP.

Analysts had warned that SAP risked losing ground to rival Oracle in the field of cloud-computing. However, there are not many assets in the business available for purchase.

Salesforce.com is seen as too big to acquire, Oracle Corp bought RightNow Technologies in October, and NetSuite is majority-owned by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

"In fact, it is not clear who is next in line behind SuccessFactors. For this reason, despite the apparently rich price tag, we would not rule out the risk of a counter bid," WestLb analyst Jonathan Crozier said.

Heino Ruland, an analyst at Ruland Research, said the price is way too high, adding that the race for cloud-computing technology was heating up to the point where it seems market players are spending irrationally just to stay in the game, mirroring the dotcom bubble more than a decade ago.

The price SAP is paying represents about eight times forecast 2012 revenues for SucceeeFactors, analysts said, compared with a multiple of 5.5 that Oracle paid for RightNow.

"The valuation of this deal is high but reasonable in our opinion, in light of the high-growth, strategic asset that is being acquired," Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund said.

SAP now says it aims to become the world's No. 1 cloud business and plans to get there without more major acquisitions.

"We're going to remain an organic growth company primarily, but where there is an opportunity, a crown jewel in the market like SuccessFactors, and where it can help us become the cloud powerhouse we want to be, you make the move," co-CEO Bill McDermott said on a conference call with analysts and journalists.

SuccessFactors' operating margin jumped to 9 percent in the third quarter from zero a year earlier, and the company said it could not hire quickly enough to meet demand.

SAP raised its sales outlook on the deal, saying its revenue could easily reach 21 billion euros by 2015, about a billion euros more than expected. Its 2012 earnings will be hurt by the purchase, but there will be a positive impact from 2013 on.

SuccessFactors, which went public at $10 a share four years ago, makes human resources software used by companies to review employee performance.

Shares of Taleo Corp, SuccessFactors' closest rival in the business of offering human resources software over the web, soared 21 percent in Nasdaq trade, rising $6.96 to $39.83.

Shares of other software-as-a-service companies, such as Cornerstone OnDemand Inc, Kenexa Corp and Ultimate Software Group Inc, also rose sharply in reaction to the news.

E-commerce firm Ariba Inc and travel and expense management software maker Concur Technologies Inc were also up.

JPMorgan advised SAP on the deal, while Morgan Stanley advised SuccessFactors.

Bombs hit Shi'ite pilgrims In Iraq, kill 32 (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? A series of bombs tore through crowds of Shi'ite pilgrims celebrating a major ritual across Iraq on Monday, killing at least 32 people, mostly women and children, and wounding scores more, local police and witnesses said.

The attacks, at the height of Ashura, which commemorates the death of Prophet Mohammad's grandson Imam Hussein and defines Shi'ite Islam, underscored Iraq's fragile security as the last U.S. troops withdraw from the country by the end of the year.

In the first attack, a car bomb blasted the end of one procession in the city of Hilla, killing 16 mainly women and children, wounding 45 others and leaving bloody pools, shoes and torn clothes scattered across the street, police and witnesses said.

"A powerful and horrible explosion went off behind us, smoke filled the area," said Hadi al-Mamouri, who was taking part in the ritual. "I could only hear the screams of women and I could only see the bodies of women and children on the street."

A second attack involving two roadside bombs killed at least six more people at another procession in Hilla and wounded 18 more, police sources said.

"I was shopping nearby, and suddenly a bomb went off as the procession reached the intersection. People were scattered on the ground and everyone started rescuing the injured," Ammar Hussein, 55, said at the scene of the second blast.

Authorities in Hilla imposed a city-wide ban on cars to help prevent more attacks.

Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, is a mainly Shi'ite city on a route used by pilgrims visiting Shi'ite holy sites to the south.

LAST U.S. TROOPS TO LEAVE

In Baghdad, at least 11 people were killed and 38 more wounded by roadside bombs targeting Shi'ite pilgrims in three different neighborhoods, police and hospital sources said.

On the outskirts of Baghdad, gunmen using hand grenades attacked Shi'ite pilgrims marching to the holy city of Kerbala, killing two and wounding four in Latifiya, police said.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across Iraq, along with thousands of foreign pilgrims, most dressed in black, streamed into the city of Kerbala to mark Ashura, a ritual in which the faithful beat their heads and chests to mourn the slaying of Imam Hussein at the battle of Kerbala in 680.

Security officials assigned thousands of police officers and soldiers to protect the pilgrims as they headed to Imam Hussein's shrine in Kerbala. No major violence was reported in Kerbala amid tight security.

Monday's attacks came as the last 10,000 American troops prepare to withdraw by the end of 2011, more than eight years after the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein and allowed the country's Shi'ite majority to ascend to power.

Violence in Iraq has eased since sectarian strife took the country to the brink of civil war a few years after the invasion. But Sunni Islamists tied to al Qaeda and Shi'ite militias still carry out deadly attacks almost daily.

On Monday, an Iraqi Sunni Muslim insurgent group with links to Saddam's banned Baath party vowed to continue attacks on U.S. personnel staying in Iraq even after troops withdraw.

Sunni Islamist insurgents often target Shi'ite shrines and ceremonies in an attempt to inflame sectarian tensions still simmering close to the surface in Iraq.

Iraq's security forces say they are generally ready to contain the stubborn insurgencies, but they acknowledge gaps in their abilities such as air defense and intelligence gathering once the American military depart.
