Guest post: Carl Richards on confusing investing with entertainment ...

Every new year is filled with financial strategists, pundits and gurus weighing in with their predictions and forecasts for the financial markets.? You can see this year?s many examples over at Pragmatic Capitalism. The problem is not in the forecasts themselves which will if history is any guide turn out to be a mixed bag by year end.? The problem is when investors take these forecasts seriously and adjust their financial plans accordingly.? This is by all accounts confuses what is an exercise in publicity with actual investing.

Carl Richards, the now controversial, financial planner and author has made frequent appearances on Abnormal Returns via his work at the Bucks Blog and Behavior Gap.? Carl is also the author of the newly published book, The Behavior Gap: Simple Ways to Stop Doing Dumb Things with Money Guest post: Carl Richards on confusing investing with entertainment. This excerpt from Carl?s book talks about the mistake we make in confusing what we see and hear in the financial media with actual investment advice.

Investing Is Not Entertainment ? Carl Richards

We get into trouble when we confuse investing with enter?tainment.

A decade or so ago, investing had become America?s fa?vorite spectator sport. Everywhere you went people were talking about finding the next hot stock, mutual fund, or alternative investment. Magazines with covers like ?Ten Hot Funds to Buy Now? and ?Five Stocks That Sizzle? made in?vesting sound fun. You couldn?t turn on the television with?out seeing some lout screaming ?Buy! Buy! Buy!?

Most of the stock market coverage in the media was de?signed to appeal to our fantasies about getting rich quickly?our wildest financial hopes and dreams. And most of us were eager to swallow the story that we could get rich quickly in stocks. So, despite knowing at some level that market timing, stock picking, and day-trading are hazardous to our wealth, many people still did those things.

Every one of those investors would have benefited from asking these questions: Am I investing to meet my most im?portant financial goals, or am I investing as a form of enter?tainment? Am I being realistic, or am I letting my fantasies run away with me?

Sure, investing is fun while you?re making money. And it?s fun to indulge in occasional daydreams about getting rich the easy way. But this is not Monopoly. This is real life. We?re dealing with real money and real goals. When we for?get that?when we confuse investing and entertainment?we almost always end up behaving badly.

So next time you are tempted to ?play the stock market? maybe you should go to the movies instead.

Apple preparing to target Amazon with iBooks improvements?

According to anonymous sources, Apple is planning to hold a press event in New York City this month, allegedly about improvements to its iBooks platform. TechCrunch confirmed this independently with its own source, though most details such as the date and time of the event are still unknown.

The takeaway from this rumor is that Apple is preparing to target Amazon directly by using the popularity of the iPad in the tablet space. While Apple has dominated the digital music world with the iTunes Music Store, the digital book market is still largely up for grabs.

Amazon historically has attempted to succeed independently of the major book publishers by establishing its own publishing imprints and encouraging authors to publish directly to the Kindle platform. The Kindle Owners' Lending Library program gives Amazon Prime subscribers access to one book per month, but the available books to choose from is severely limited because the major book publishers are not on board.

Conversely, Apple has managed to secure alternative arrangements with book publishers and could thus be in a position to announce an iBooks update that could directly affect Amazon's interests in digital publishing. GeekWire points out that while Amazon has a vested interest in making digital books successful on the Kindle due to the Kindle Fire's low $199 price point, Apple is not similarly constrained thanks to the higher profit margins of the iPad.

Tanier: Plays NFL wild-card teams can't do without

Tanier: Playoff time means diagram time, strategy fans! Let?s start with two rookie quarterbacks why rely on play-action to make up for their lack of experience. We?ll then move on to some vintage Drew Brees deep passing, and the type of defense the Lions will use to stop him. (Or at least try.)

Nebraska vs. South Carolina - 2012-01-02 - NCAA College Football Score

South Carolina is one victory away from the winningest season in its history. To achieve that, the Gamecocks will need to overcome one of college football's most storied programs - and one neither they nor their coach have defeated. Tenth-ranked South Carolina takes a stifling defense and an up-and-coming quarterback into Orlando on Monday to face No. 21 Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl. Steve Spurrier's teams have never posted a losing record since he became coach at South Carolina in 2005, ...

HP Folio 13 review

By the time HP unveiled its first Ultrabook, the Folio 13, other heavyweights like Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Toshiba had already gotten a head start of up to several months. But being fashionably late to market may have worked in Hewlett-Packard's favor: the Folio 13 ($900 and up) is temptingly priced for what it is. Even the base model comes stocked with a 128GB SSD, backlit keyboard, HDMI port and Ethernet jack -- specs that undercut the ASUS Zenbook UX31 and 13-inch MacBook Air, and render the $900 Acer Aspire S3 nearly irrelevant. Not to mention, it brings business-friendly features like TPM that other Ultrabook makers have omitted from their 1.0 products. But surely HP cut some corners to get here, no? Is this really as sweet a deal as it seems? Funnily enough, the answer is "yes," on both counts.

India death toll climbs in wake of Cyclone Thane

The death toll from a storm that has pummeled India's southeastern coastline rose Saturday to 27, with thousands forced to seek refuge in emergency shelters, officials in the worst affected area said.

The Tamil Nadu district of Cuddalore, south of the city of Chennai, bore the brunt of Cyclone Thane's fury Friday, with winds gusting at almost 90 miles per hour at its peak.

The storm uprooted trees, ripped off traffic signals from their posts and sent shards of glass and other debris whizzing through the air.

Amuthavalli, the district's top official who goes by a single name, told CNN the number of residents killed stood at 27 as of Saturday but is not expected to climb much higher. Some lost their lives when walls collapsed or downed power lines caused electrocution.

One of those killed was a French national, the French Foreign Ministry said Saturday. France presents its sincere condolences to the victim's family and his loved ones, the ministry said.

The first priority is to restore power supplies, she said. Workers will then start clearing fallen trees and other wreckage from the district's roads. Read More
