World needs economic ethics, new rules, pope says (Reuters)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) ? The global crisis shows that the world needs economic ethics and new rules so the financial system benefits all humanity, Pope Benedict said on Monday in his keynote speech for the New Year.

In a wide-ranging address, the pontiff also called for the end of violence across North Africa and the Middle East, and denounced attacks against religious freedom.

"The present moment is sadly marked by a profound disquiet and the various crises - economic, political and social - are a dramatic expression of this," he told diplomats in what has come to be known as his yearly "state of the world" speech.

He said the "grave and disturbing developments of the global economic and financial crisis" that had started in industrialized countries were now infecting the world and leaving many, particularly the young, disoriented and frustrated.

Adding a personal touch to appeals that have been made in recent Vatican documents, Benedict called for an injection of ethics in the way the world economy is run.

"The crisis can and must be an incentive to reflect on human existence and on the importance of its ethical dimension," he said, addressing diplomats from nearly 180 countries in French.

Changes in the economy should not only be "an effort to stem private losses or to shore up national economies, but to give ourselves new rules that ensure that all can lead a dignified life and develop their abilities for the benefit of the community as a whole."

Since the downturn began, Benedict has often said the lack of sufficient ethics in the world of finance could not be overlooked, and that economic decisions should be based on what advances the common good rather than individual gain.

A major document issued in October by the Vatican's justice and peace department called for sweeping reforms of the world economy and the creation of an ethical global authority to regulate financial markets.

In other parts of his speech to the diplomats accredited to the Holy See, Benedict spoke of the "Arab Spring" uprisings and threw his weight behind calls for democratic and peaceful change in the region.

He called for "the recognition of the inalienable dignity of each human person and of his or her fundamental rights" in countries in that region. He said respect for the person "must lead to the end of all violence."

Benedict said he hoped that the presence of Arab League observers in Syria would help to end the bloodshed there, and urged the international community to do more to bring about peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

He said religious freedom was under threat in various places in Africa and Asia and again denounced attacks against Christians such as those in Nigeria, where Christmas Day bombings against churches killed at least 27 people.

The pope, who visited Africa last year, called such attacks "religiously motivated terrorism," and said they were "the antithesis of religion" and contributed to its destruction.

'Tim Tebow's Fire'? '80s song reworked for QB

Jeff Gross / Getty Images

Tim Tebow is now the subject of a reworked 1980s song.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Tim Tebow wasn't even born until 1987, but a hit song from 1985 has been reworked to honor him.

British musician John Parr. who had a #1 hit with "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" in 1985, wrote new lyrics for his song focusing on the Denver Broncos quarterback.

Where the original song went "Gonna be your man in motion, all I need's a pair of wheels," the Tebow-ized lyrics read "Gonna be a man in motion, all I need's my Broncos team." And instead of "soon be home, only just a few miles down the road," the new lyrics read "Soon be home, only just four downs to go."

And of course, the title lyric, "St. Elmo's Fire," has been changed in one reference to "Tim Tebow's Fire."

The song was actually released last fall, after Parr performed it on ESPN's "SportsNation," but is getting more attention now that the Broncos are in the NFL playoffs. Denver TV station FOX31 spoke to Parr, who told them "I was inspired by Tim Tebow so I wanted to modify the lyrics ... in his honor of the way he lives his life as being a great example."

The changes may not be as far off as you might think. The song was originally written to honor a wheelchair athlete, Canadian paralympian Rick Hansen, whose "Man in Motion" world tour took him around the world in 1985.

Listen to the song below, and tell us what you think on Facebook.

Ford Sync clears the four million mark, aims to double that within three years

Ford's Sync in-car connectivity system enjoyed quite a prosperous little 2011. Last January, installations of the service topped the three million mark. Now, almost exactly a year later, Sync has come to a full four million vehicles, and it's looking to expand its reach even further. Ford announced the milestone at CES yesterday, projecting that the voice-activated, Microsoft-powered software will clear the nine million hurdle by as early as 2015. It may sound like a bold prediction, but considering that Sync is slated to roll out to markets in Asia and Europe this year, it certainly seems realistic. For more details and back-patting, check out the full PR after the break.

Supreme Court struggles with Texas election case (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court appeared to struggle Monday with what to do about holding elections in Texas for the state legislature and Congress in a case that could affect the federal Voting Rights Act and even the balance of power in the House.

Texas' primaries already have been pushed back once from March to early April amid a dispute between the GOP-dominated state government and minority groups.

Several justices considered whether courts could resolve the matter in time for the April vote. "Why can't this all be pushed back and wouldn't that eliminate a lot of the problems we are grappling with in this case?" Justice Samuel Alito asked.

At issue is whether Latinos and African-Americans who accounted for the vast majority of the state's 4 million new residents in the 2010 census have appropriate political power. The outcome also might help determine the balance of power in the House in this year's congressional elections. Republicans currently hold the majority.

The justices wrestled with whether the state's plan or maps drawn by federal judges in San Antonio that are friendlier to minorities should take effect, or whether some new effort should be made.

There was no consensus apparent at an afternoon argument session at the high court, although the justices on the liberal side of the court seemed more sympathetic to minority groups and the conservatives appeared more favorable to the state.

The legal wrangling is complicated by the involvement of three federal courts ? district courts in San Antonio and Washington, and the Supreme Court.

The dispute arises under the Voting Rights Act, which protects racial and ethnic minorities from discrimination at polling places. In addition, all or parts of 16 states ? mainly in the South and with a history of discrimination in voting ? must get Justice Department or a Washington court's approval before making changes in the way elections are conducted. Texas is covered by the so-called preclearance requirement for its electoral changes.

The issue has come to a head now because Texas needs political maps that reflect its population growth to hold elections this year.

Texas wants to use its maps even though the Washington court has so far refused to approve them. A trial on those maps is scheduled to begin next week.

The San Antonio court, hearing a separate lawsuit filed by minorities, drew maps of its own in November because the period for candidates to file to run for office was approaching.

The justices jumped into the case at Texas' request because the state objected that the judges did not take the state's maps sufficiently into account when they drew their own. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican who attended Monday's arguments, said "the judges disregarded the will and sovereign power of the state of Texas."

Abbott said a high court ruling by February 1 could allow the primaries to take place as scheduled on April 3.

One possible path is to wait for the Washington court to rule, which could clear up several problems in this case relating to how the different federal courts interact.

Jose Garza, the San Antonio-based lawyer representing Mexican-American state lawmakers and other opponents of the state's maps, said he expects a decision by mid-February.

But Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she doubted the court could move that quickly, leaving the justices to ponder how fast they should act and when voting in Texas should take place.

Mild Weather Keeps Portland Golf Course Open

5:15 p.m. EST

, January 6, 2012

PORTLAND ? Last year at this time, one blizzard had already blasted the state and another major storm was brewing. Not so for the first few days of 2012, and the milder air and absence of snow has had area golfers hitting the links.

For the first time in three years, the Portland Golf Course is open for play in January. Arctic air crept into the region Tuesday night but didn't last, and the forecast for Saturday predicts a high of almost 50 degrees.

The mild weather has had the phone ringing for tee times, said Portland Golf Course co-owner John Kelley Jr.

"We're trying to take advantage of [the better weather]," he said. "It's been horrible for several years because of the economy and the weather."

Winter does require some adjustments to your golf swing, however.

"If the greens are frozen, you have to shorten your shots into the green" because the ball will bounce higher and travel farther, he said. "But people are welcome to come out and play."

Fiji government imposes new public order controls (AP)

SUVA, Fiji ? Fiji's government stepped back from a promise of a more open society Friday, imposing new controls on public order just a day before it was supposed to lift more than two years of emergency rule.

While the new controls are a somewhat looser version of the emergency rule imposed by Commodore Frank Bainimarama in 2009, critics of the military ruler are expected to decry the latest move as further evidence of bad faith by his regime.

Bainimarama's government had announced on New Year's Day that it would lift the emergency rule Saturday, but the new rules indicate that the military government will still maintain tight control.

"This modernization (of public order controls) is necessary to effectively address terrorism, offenses against public order and safety, racial and religious vilification, hate speech and economic sabotage," Bainimarama told reporters in the capital, Suva.

Bainimarama, who seized power in a coup in late 2006, imposed the emergency regulations in mid-2009 after the South Pacific nation's Court of Appeal ruled his military government was illegal.

The self-appointed prime minister said the latest public order laws are not extreme when compared to other countries.

"For example, for any breach of the offenses under the Public Order Act, a person can only be detained for a maximum of 48 hours and if need be for a further 14 days ? but only if the commissioner of police deems it necessary and with the consent of the (interior) minister," he said. The police commissioner is a member of the country's ruling military clique.

While the previous detention rules were somewhat loosened, a ban against public meetings was also expected to be relaxed, but that was not the case.

Bainimarama said Friday that his government seeks to empower Fijians, modernize the country and strengthen the economy.

In a statement Sunday, he stressed that public order would be maintained and that he would soon announce nationwide consultation for a new constitution, beginning next month, to establish a democratically elected government.

His regime has already created a media council with powers that ensure the state's continuing control over what is published. Under the new rules, military censors are expected to disappear permanently from media newsrooms, but stiff 100,000 Fiji dollar ($50,000) fines for breaching content regulations come into force for media organizations. Journalists face fines of up to F$1,000, and publishers and editors can be fined as much as F$25,000 or jailed for two years for some breaches.

Bainimarama has broken earlier pledges to return Fiji to democracy, but for the past two years has consistently claimed elections will be held in 2014.

When he seized power, Bainimarama said Fiji's ruling political classes were corrupt and that the existing voting system was racially based to give indigenous Fijians greater voting power than the ethnic Indians who make up around 35 percent of the nation's 900,000 people.

He said Fiji had been mismanaged and hindered by greed and selfishness.

"You and I must not allow a few to dictate the destiny of our country for their own selfish needs," he said in Sunday's New Year's message.

Relations between Fiji and many countries have soured since Bainimarama seized power, and he has remained under heavy pressure to return the country to democracy.

Fiji has had sanctions and financial penalties imposed on it by the United States, European Union, Australia and New Zealand. It remains suspended from the British-led Commonwealth grouping of 53 nations ? mainly former British colonies.

While many countries and the Commonwealth welcomed Sunday's moves, the latest controls are expected to find few supporters among democratic states.

Broadcom befriends Sling and Myriad, outs new set-top and streaming chips

Busy days at Broadcom, which has already forgotten about its earlier 5G WiFi announcement and launched a barrage of new chips for set-top boxes and home networking. The line-up supports the latest MoCA 2.0 standard for greater network bandwidth over coax wiring, but even more interesting is what some of the SoCs can do for smart TV and streaming. The BCM7425 dual-tuner HD gateway SoC will support Sling Media's "place-shifting" platform, potentially making it easier for set-top manufacturers to enable TV streaming to mobile devices. A similar deal has been inked with Myriad over its clever Alien Vue software (shown above), allowing Broadcom-equipped boxes to run apps designed for Google TV and HTML 5 without the need for extra dedicated hardware. In short, if your service provider fails to make TV content smarter or easier to access in 2012, they won't be able to blame it on Broadcom. Further details in the PR combo after the break and at the source link.
